A letter on my door step. portraits are more than paper

I think this is very powerful. This is a blog post by another photographer, Jeanine Thurston. She has encouraged the sharing of this.

July 2nd, 2011

Jeanine -

Today I am writing for a couple of reasons.  I have some quiet time at the moment and need to get a couple of things off my mind.  I will leave this for my husband to deliver to you when he is ready.

You photographed my wedding, you photographed my first pregnancy and my first baby.  I contacted you awhile back to photograph my 2nd child and family.  After getting prices and realizing I would want all of the pictures as we love your work – I decided against spending $500+ – which is what I normally spend for portraits and prints with you..  Please know it is not because I don’t value your amazing eye, or how much we love the experience.

That week that I decided to NOT do a session with you, this is how I spent some money.

On Sunday I called and cancelled our session.  Monday I went out and got my hair cut ($39+tip), and colored ($65), Thursday I had my nails done ($24), my family went out to dinner at a somewhat expensive restaurant for no particular reason costing us $79 + tip.  This was just 4 days since canceling our session, already totaling over $200 for un necessary things.  My nails only lasted about 2 weeks, my hair is gone, and seven weeks passed when I got the phone call from our doctor.  It was not something I expected and the cancer has spread very quickly.  I will be leaving my husband, my 6 year old girl and my now 2 year old – not by choice.  It is very hard for me to talk about it which is why I need to write you.

I watch your Facebook page and your posts about the value of a photo and if I could give back all of those things that I purchased this few weeks after I cancelled my session with you, knowing what I know now, and have that session, well… I would do it in a heartbeat.

Now my time is done and there are no more chances for me.  The next time someone cancels a session – my wish is that you forward this letter to them.  Time is fragile, it is gone before you know you had it.  If you charged $200 for one print it wouldn’t be enough for what it is actually worth.  I cringe to think that my priorities were a manicure over a memory to pass onto my babies and husband.

My love and thanks for what you have given us from past photos.  I am so sorry that I did not see it as more than paper until now.

Use that pop-up flash in daytime photography!

In the interest to help regular folks capture better photos, I decided to create this blog. Well, in that theme, here is a blog post where you can see the difference a little flash can do to a picture.

These days the cameras are so advanced that putting that flash on during day time will result in a much better photograph. Yes, you read that right…flash during day time. Following are some examples of what happens when flash is NOT used during daytime. These are taken by me and a friend of mine. Not to nitpick on him…but it makes my point of using flash during daytime so much more clearer(no pun intended!).

As you can see, the faces of the people are hardly visible. Had the flash been on..and not on “Auto”…”On”, it would have solved the problem. Check the images below. I did a test just for this blog. One is with flash and one is without. No other changes. And this was done on “Auto camera settings”..so it can be done on any compact cameras that you may have.

Jana in a park - without flash!

Now have a look at the same photograph with flash on. I didn’t change any other settings…the camera did the work.

What a little flash does!

Depending on your screen, the colors may look ok or a little off. But the point is…you can see my wife’s face!

So what do you have to do to get better pictures?

Follow these steps:

  • Position people off center first off. Check my Rule of Thirds for better composition ideas.
  • Turn “On” the flash on your camera. Do not leave it on “Auto” since during day time, the flash won’t fire then.
  • Take the picture! That’s it. It should be correct. If not, turn off the flash. But 99% of the times, you will get better pictures in day time.

Hope this helps!

How to choose a photographer!

How to choose a photographer

Credit to Kevin H – a photographer colleague. I was about to write this in my own way, but saw that he had something similar and I share the same feelings. So I thought I would share with his permission!  Note: I did personalize few things. :)

I recently attended a wedding show in Orange County just to see what other photographers are doing. (Side note, I shopped around as a consumer, not a photographer, nor did I ever disclose that I was a photographer.) Guess what I found? Nothing. They all basically provide the same service; 2 photographers on your wedding day, images on CD, a wedding album, and a set timeframe for photographing your wedding.

They all had the same great looking images in the same albums (at least as far as a bride would know). So why should I consider photographer A vs. photographer B? Which photographer would I hire for my event? After some contemplation I chose one. Which one you ask? It doesn’t really matter. What matters is how I came to my conclusion.

Two features or characteristics stuck out. First was personality. The photographer I chose connected with me. He was outgoing and found a way to be my friend and help me open up. You could say we instantly “hit it off”. Think about this for a moment, whether it is your wedding, or any other photographed event, you want the photographer to capture the “real you”. If you are uncomfortable with your photographer, you will have your guard up all day. But if you feel comfortable with your photographer, like you do with a close friend, he/she will be able to bring out the real you and capture those special moments just as you intended them to be.

Secondly, I found that each photographer had different packages. For this package it will cost this much and for that package it will cost that much. Doesn’t a bride already have enough decisions to make? Does she really know what she wants from her photographer? Maybe she does, but for this reason I liked the photographer that offered just one package. I found this to be an easy decision, this is what he offers and this is what he will charge. Checkmark on photographer, let’s talk to the caterers now. Shouldn’t we, as the professionals in our industry, know basically what a bride wants and create a package for her and make this choice an easy one for her? Sure, we can have add-ons and extra services, but we can talk about that later.

Don’t get me wrong. There are some important questions to ask; how many weddings have you shot? Do you have a second photographer with you? Do you have back up equipment? The list could go on forever. Do your research, know what is important to you and be sure to ask.

When all was said and done, here is what I came away with;

  • Feel comfortable with your choice of photographers, or any vendor you choose.
  • As a photographer, less can be more. Design a package that covers your bride’s needs and put a price on it. Don’t confuse her with half a dozen different packages to choose from. She may just gravitate towards the easier choice.
  • And for the brides/clients out there, know what you want and ask for it.
  • What kind of contract does the photographer have? A one-pager that leaves a lot of questions unanswered until the day you need to refer to it? Or a detailed one that everyone understands and agree with? More clarity is better than less. Just a like photo…if it is not in focus, a lot can be left to be desired! So, bride and groom…make sure you have a solid contract. That is also a sign of a professional photographer.

What are your thoughts? I would love to hear what you think on this topic. And please be sure to click the FaceBook share button at the top right.
